Godalming was successful in achieving Fairtrade Town status on 27th August 2008. The campaign seeks to promote the concept of Fairtrade throughout Godalming, Farncombe and Binscombe by encouraging catering outlets, businesses, schools, churches and others to use Fairtrade tea, coffee etc and to encourage retailers to stock a range of Fairtrade products.
The Fairtrade Towns campaign is an initiative of the Fairtrade Foundation www.fairtrade.org.uk. In order to become and remain a Fairtrade Town a Town must fulfil five goals:
Goal 1 - Local council passes a resolution supporting Fairtrade.
Goal 2 - A range of (at least two) Fairtrade products are readily available in the area's shops and served in local cafes/catering establishments.
Goal 3 - Fairtrade products are used by an appropriate number of local work places (offices, shops, B&Bs, etc) and community organisations (faith communities, schools, universities, etc).
Goal 4 - Attract media coverage and popular support for the campaign.
Goal 5 - A local Steering Group is convened to ensure progress and continued commitment to the campaign.
On 23rd July 2009, and again on 24 November 2011, Godalming Town Council reiterated its support for the Fairtrade Town campaign when it resolved to only use Fairtrade, tea, coffee and sugar in all meetings and offices and other Fairtrade products where appropriate. The Council further resolved to promote awareness of Fairtrade both internally and externally, wherever practically possible, through its website, communications, publications, public notices and signs. The Council will also use its influence to urge local retailers to provide Fairtrade options for residents and to urge local business to offer Fairtrade options to their staff and promote the Fairtrade mark internally. Finally the Council nominated a council representative (currently Councillor Liz Wheatley) to sit on the Fairtrade Town steering group and support ongoing work to promote Fairtrade.
