The Mint

There is always a great deal of interest in the district known as The Mint.

We cannot be sure if coins were ever minted here but although it is unlikely that there was ever a mint for national currency in the area it is possible that some kind of workshop for the old 'Trader tokens' might have been situated here.

In his paper 'Primitive Godalming' Samual Welman slips in this brief note 'This little community (the early settlement in Anglo-Saxon times) was entitled by the laws of the 10th century to a mint, and the site of it has still left its name with us'.
